Prometheus

City Lights

Prometheus

Once, we bowed to the sun

Humbled by our hunched backs

We dared not stare

For fear of losing sight

Then we learned to stand straight

With our heads held high

Blinded by the neon signs

As we walk along the city streets

“Paradise” it flashed

The best brothel in town

The women outside

Flaunted their skin

Not a single hair in sight

Evolution.

We’ve come a long way

Since that first fire in the cave

Now, we can live in the dark

Like the creatures we once feared,

“Change”

The young boy begged secretly

With a jagged half-can of Coca-cola in hand

They all passed by him

I pass by him

For day is night and night is day

We have no time

I get back to my apartment

The city is amazing from here

The streets are lined with lampposts

The skyscrapers are all illuminated

An old man is staying by a dumpster fire

His ragged face covered

In bushes of unkempt hair

Vestiges

We’ve come a long way

I stare at the million lights

Fascinated by their glow

I switch off my light for a better view

On and off

On and off

With a single flick of a button

On and off

On and off

Civilization

On and off

On and off

I see the old man by the dumpster

On and off

On and off

He is shivering amidst the flame

On and off

On and off

He lies down and rests his cheeks on the cold pavement

On and off

On and off

He closes his eyes, he sees nothing but darkness

On and off

On and off

On and off
